Time to do an “About-Face”...

It turns out that the face is unlike a book cover—you CAN judge a person by their face!

Gasp! Let me unpack this statement for you.

In 2008, researchers Nicholas Rule and Nalini Ambady co-authored a paper titled “The Face of Success”. In their study, they asked participants to rate CEO’s from Fortune 500 companies just by looking at their headshots. Ultimately, after rating categories like competence and likability, the results accurately correlated to the level of profit the CEO’s company made!
Crazy, right?!
Let's see if you can do the same!

Which of these CEOs have the most profitable companies?

Profitable CEOs

Our faces tell a story...

Our face shape, our wrinkles, our hair, our facial expressions, etc. all impact how we are viewed. This goes for our digital first impression as well! Since more and more of our world is happening online, having a good headshot just got really important.

This kind of stuff terrifies me.

And yet, we must carry on.

Since our brains make judgements about people instantaneously (the amygdala ‘decides‘ who might be friend or foe), controlling our personal brand is important. If you are daring enough to want to know how you are perceived by others, there is a website (PhotoFeeler.com) that helps you choose your best photos.

Here are some images I’ve submitted of myself and the ratings I’ve received:

You can rate other people’s photos to receive “Karma Points” for free feedback (and take part in a great exercise in understanding how quickly we form an opinion about someone!) or purchase credits for immediate feedback.

If you are brave enough to try this experience, I’d love to hear about it!
