The Art of Body Language

Realism or Cubism?

Pushed to choose, put me in the Cubism category.

Ask my husband the same question and he’ll shout Realism without pause.

Why?
We view art differently.

I love art, ideas, design, and being creative. To me, seeing ideas and concepts from a new perspective fills me up. The unique angle is what impresses and inspires me.

For my husband, art is the ability to accurately replicate what is seen. The more realistic the art, the better. To which I respond…

"That's what cameras are for!"

The truth is that both perspectives are valid.

Just like nonverbal communication, we need to be observant and understand the cues we are observing (aka Realism) AND we need to know how to use those cues to effectively express ourselves with influence and charisma (aka Cubism).

When you understand the body language basics, you are able to paint your version of how you choose to show up.

You can use your paintbrush to show up with intention and show things like:

  • Charisma
  • Support
  • Confidence
  • Connection
  • Influence

And per Bob Ross, happy little accidents are fine, obvi.

Studying body language is like painting by numbers. You learn the various cues and have the blueprint for what they mean. They give you the plan and the borders.

And once you have mastered the cues, it gives you the ability to create an impression…

…And another category of art, Impressionism!

P.S.

Are you Team Realism or Team Cubism?

I’d love it if you replied with your answer and your favorite artist.

My favorite artist? Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
