I have a love-hate relationship with emails. I need them to communicate with the world but on more than one occasion I’ve experienced “inbox bloat” and felt like I couldn’t spend another 7 seconds dealing with them!
For most of these emails, my brain is on autofill.
I start to skim and fill in what they are asking of me and what I need to do to move on. And now it’s even on sites like LinkedIn as well. Here is a recent example (I’ve inserted blanks to protect the innocent):
Dear Kristin,
The ___________ system needs innovation. National policies are directing valuable resources away from ___________ in need. Without passionate advocates, that’s unlikely to change. That’s where _______________ comes in.
Yawn.
The cause might be great, but I’m already bored, not interested, and know that they just want my money.
And yet…
There are some emails I don’t mind getting. Some emails I find:
Informative.
Amusing.
Worth a minute of my time.
These are people I follow. Companies I like. And friends and family that I enjoy hearing from.
And some of them even want my money and I’m much more willing to hear their pitch because they’re doing things well.
What are these people doing you ask?
Well...
They Bob Ross things up!
They engage me.
They make the topic interesting.
They show a point of view.
They demonstrate their personality.
They wake my brain up!
If you want people to pay attention and engage with your email:
You need to make a connection.
You need to make it personal.
You need to care.
Or as Bob Ross puts it,
“Don’t forget to make all these little things individuals — all of them special in their own way.”
I’ve been working at Bob Ross’ing my emails up for quite some time now and am excited to announce that I’m launching my very own online product that can help you build connections via emails.
