“I’d love to meet for coffee” the email reads but it ends differently than all the networking coffee connections I’ve ever received.

Attached to the email is the gif below.

Seeing this made me know I would enjoy my time connecting over coffee.

And I did!

I’m part of a networking group that connects fellow business owners and professionals as a way to grow connections.

Everyone has been great yet one of my connections stood out from his very first email introduction.

I mean, I know the science so I was surprised at how a little thing like a gif could have such an impact.  I was delighted that someone actually took a moment to personalize the coffee request with some personality.

I like to call them charisma sprinkles.

My coffee connection had taken a moment to show that he had read my “bio” and knew what kind of work I did.

Attaching the gif added both warmth and competence to his introduction and made me immediately like him.

It was like at first gif.

We immediately fell into an easy conversation and have supported each other’s business goals ever since.

It turns out nonverbal cues work in the digital world as well.

Showing people that you are an actual person and not a robot, or robot-like person, on the other end is a gigantic step in the right direction to building rapport with others.

We can smell charisma.

Even in an email.

I knew it the second I saw the gif in the email I received.

And you know it when you see it as well.

So how do you show up with personality in the digital world?

Happily there are easy things you can do to cultivate digital connection.

It’s little things like:

  • Gifs
  • Engaging words
  • Vignettes
  • Emoji’s

Basically, things that wake the other person’s brain up!

Don't underestimate the power of a well placed gif, word, emoji, etc.
