I just discovered this comedian and wanted to share her "insights" with you.

Introducing...Sarah Cooper!

Sarah is the author of the book “100 Tricks to Appear Smart in Meetings” and below is her YouTube clip,
“Nodding Strategies for Your Next Meeting”.
Take a moment to watch, laugh, and nod along.
Sarah does a good job with her nodding know-how but missed a critical one.

The Triple Nod!

The triple nod is the slow 1…2…3… nod which is the nonverbal cue to “Tell me more”. Nodding your head this way is a brilliant way to pull out more information from others.

For example:

  • Your boss is giving you a new assignment and you want more details (because the assignment sounds like it requires some MacGyver-like skills)
  • Your neighbor is telling you about your other neighbor and you want to glean more intel
  • The Customer Service Rep is telling you why you can’t do what you want to do
  • Your colleague is telling you why your idea won’t work
  • Your friend is sharing a funny story about their weekend
Exhibit A
See Clint Eastwood's speed below as an example of how the nod works.

Warning!

Nodding too much turns you into a bobblehead and makes the other person feel rushed.

(Picture a person nodding quickly while saying mmm, hmm while you are talking.)

And not nodding at all makes you seem stiff or bored.

(Picture Sheldon form The Big Bang theory.)

Nodding Spectrum
Okay, get out there and put your nodding strategies to use and let me know how it goes.
Here’s to looking really smart in meetings!

Your co-pilot (with a knowing nod),
