Pickle
Blah, blah, blah,...Pickle!
Blah, blah, blah,... Crackerjack!
Blah, blah, blah,... Squirrel!

I like you.

And in order for you to like me, you need to know and trust me.

We need to feel connected.

One of the building blocks of connection involves the chemical oxytocin. This adorable little hormone (aptly nicknamed the cuddle hormone!), allows us to feel a stronger connection with others.

Touch and eye contact are the quickest and easiest ways to build this connection and one way we can leverage this is by sending videos. And with virtual connecting in full force and clearly hear to stay, being able to see one another has become paramount.

Tip.
Did you know that just looking at a profile picture while talking with someone online helps to build connection? You should try it. Yes, pulling up someone’s LinkedIn photo while on a phone call does help create a stronger connection.
Quick story.

A friend of mine recently shared that she had received many emails to connect with a sales rep and had never taken the time to respond to the requests. And yet, when he sent her a short video (complete with him holding up a dry erase board saying “Hi” with her name!), she took a moment to watch the clip and reply to the email. My friend knew the science (I may have mentioned it to her approximately 8,672 times) and still couldn’t resist the temptation to watch a personalized video and respond to the email. Score one for the sales rep.

Simply put...

We crave connection.

We need to feel seen and heard.

We want to know that we are responding to a real human being.

Video is an easy and effective way to do this.

And so are using unique and interesting words.

Words that are fun and wake our brains up are very effective.
For example, don’t pickles, crackerjacks, and squirrels have much more personality than say celery or oatmeal?

And demonstrating that we care and are not sending an email that is a generic document with your name inserted at the top.

Words matter.

People matter.

Connections matter.

Start paying attention to how you are making others feel.

BTW, this applies to both the digital world and the “real” world.

  • Are you crafting an email that builds rapport and a relationship or are you just stating facts?
  • Are you taking the time to be personable and make some genuine connections? People can feel the difference.
  • Have you added some charisma sprinkles to your emails and texts? You know…the words that wake you up!

Let me know how it's going!

What words, methods, and ways of connecting have worked for you?

I’d love it if you replied to this email so we can swap stories!

Your co-pilot,  (who is standing on a table and cheering loudly for you!),
